Saudi Arabia targets 41 GW of solar by 2032

Positioning itself to become one of the largest solar markets globally, the governments King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) has announced Saudi Arabia's ambitious plans to install 41 gigawatts (GW) worth of solar by 2032.

The oil-rich country is planning to place more focus on renewable energy generation. In addition to more solar power, it intends to add wind, geothermal, waste-to-energy and nuclear plants to its energy mix in the future. The program, said to be worth tens of millions of dollars, aims to "catapult Saudi Arabia into the group of global leaders in renewable-energy development."

Saudi Arabia announces RE targets

Yesterday, Saudi Arabia announced specific targets for solar and wind. By 2032, the country aims to get nearly a quarter of its electricity from photovoltaics and concentrating solar power alone, but the country will be expanding nuclear even faster.

Saudi Arabian government unveils ambitious renewable energy plans: 16 GW of PV, 25 GW of CSP to be installed by 2032

On Mai, 8th, 2012 Saudi Arabia has launched one of the world's most ambitious solar energy programs, cleantech advisory company Apricum (Berlin) reports. At the Saudi Solar Energy Forum in Riyadh officials from the responsible government entity King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) announced long-term development goals as well as a policy framework.

By 2032, the oil-rich country plans to generate almost a quarter of its electricity from solar energy, with a total 41 GW of solar power capacity, including 16 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 25 GW of concentrating solar power plants (CSP).

Nur die Giganten dürfen sich sonnen

Die einst erfolgsverwöhnte Solarindustrie übt sich heute in Preisdrückerei. Unternehmen wie Q-Cells und Solon sind erste Opfer des brutalen Wettbewerbs. Jetzt haben nur noch die Großen eine Chance.

„Chancen haben nur Unternehmen mit guten Kostenstrukturen, gutem Vertrieb und ausreichend finanziellem Polster, um längere Durststrecken im Markt durchzustehen“, sagte Nikolai Dobrott, Geschäftsführer der Cleantech-Beratung Apricum in Berlin. „Die Zeit der großen Player im Solarmarkt hat begonnen“, folgert er.
