Biofuels
First-generation power sources have experienced explosive growth in the past few years. Sustainably produced first generation biofuels could greatly contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The second generation of biofuels hold the promise of higher efficiency, lower emissions as well as a broader raw materials base. Raw materials prices and an evolving regulatory framework have put the pressure on small producers and are driving current consolidation in the market.
- Technology - Is it worthwhile to invest in biofuel sources of the first or second generation or even beyond?
- Markets - In which regions should these power sources be developed and where should they be sold?
- Raw materials - Which raw materials should be used and where should they be obtained? What about integration into biorefineries?
- The value chain - To which extent should value creation be vertically integrated (from the sourcing of feedstock till distribution)? How can production of biofuels be integrated in a biorefinery concept?
- Collaboration - Which players have access to the key technologies? What kind of M&A opportunities do the first generation hold?
